And hearing the stories of Ms Jean Monteverde the grandaughter of Mr Mariano Enriquez pioneer purveyor of imported art supplies in the country and owner of the eponymous Enriquez Art Supplies alonh old Azcarraga (now Claro M. Recto Ave.) How famous and renowned painter bartered their artwork in exchange of painting materials. I felt like I\u2019m part of a history!\"\"We are here today to showcase another historic event the opening of M Gallery with the theme \u201cPagdakila sa Sining Mabini:Honoring the Masters of Mabini\u201d,curated by Mr. Philip Abadicio to celebrate the bravery of Filipino Artists against the trend of modernization.

M Gallery celebrates Chinese New Year 2021 with the retrospective art show and sale Pagdakila sa Sining Mabini: Honoring the Masters of Mabini last February 9, Tuesday, 6 PM. The exhibit sale pays tribute to eight Masters of the Mabini Art School: Cesar Buenaventura, Salvador Cabrera, Jose D Castro, Gabriel Custodio, Miguel Galvez, Paco Gorospe, Crispin Lopez, and Simon Saulog.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to revive appreciation for the Mabini artists,\u201d asserted M Gallery owner, Mra Jeane Enriquez Monteverde, \u201cso we are unveiling previously hidden masterpieces from Mabini to show that all art is beautiful, no matter where they come from.\u201d\"\"<\/p>\n

Reintroducing Mabini Art In the 21st Century<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, we\u2019re taking the opportunity to reintroduce 31 outstanding works by Mabin! artists to Maniia 8 new art aud ences: the new and often younger art collectors and aficionados,\u201d she revealed.<\/p>\n

\"\"Headlining the show are two big museum-worthy impressionist pieces by Gabriel Custodio (1912-1993), \u201cStill Life-Going\u2019 (43\u00b0 x 51.6\u2033, of on canvas, 1956) and \u201cRuin\u201d (33\u00b0 x 47\u00b0, oil on canvas, 1954).\"\"<\/p>\n

Hailing from Tanza, Cavite, the UP School of Fine Arts graduate of 1939, gained prom nence for doing the marvelous murais at the St George Greek Orthodox Church in Makati and for co-founding the Talahib Art Group.<\/p>\n

\"\"Paco Gorospe (1939-2002), from Binondo, Manila and known as \u201cThe Picasso of the Philippines\u201d, has three modernist works on sale including the colorful piece called *Musician\u00ae (47.5\u2033 x 35.25\u2033, acrylic on canvas, undated).<\/p>\n

On sale, too, are still lives from J.0. Castro (1908-1994) from Carmen, Nueva Ecija, who did flower paintings for National Book Store and portraits from Salvador Cabrera (1930-1986), who is known in art circles as \u201cThe Quick Draw Artist\u201d for finishing as many as 10 paintings a day.<\/p>\n

There is a seascape by Miguel Galvez (1912-1989) from Paombong, Bulacan, who is the first Filipino to win in the South East Asia Art Festival, and a painting of a beautiful maiden by Simeon Saulog (1916-1995), whose works have made the rounds of the auction circuits, realizing prizes as high as $7,266.\"\"Aside from the historical oeuvre \u201cKatipunan\u201d (43.4\u201d x 35.5\u201d, oif on canvas, 1976) by Crispin V Lopez (1903-1985) the show also features 15 alluring landscapes, one of which is by Cesar Buenaventura (1922-1983) from Manila, who ts the son of painter Teodoro Buenaventura, studied under Maestro Femando Amorsolo, and whose peasant life and landscape works were | kened to those of Vincent van Gogh.\"\"Interestingly, Mrs Monteverde\u2019s decision to launch this Mabini show, foreseen to be the first of many firmed up when PR man Phil p Abadicio filled her in on how Cesar Buenaventuras are raking big money in the auction circuit.\"\"\u201cWhat makes these Mabini artists great is their masterful brushstrokes,\u201d she confessed, \u201ccoupled with depth, balance, and colors that bring out feelings that speak to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thus, for Mrs Monteverde, this retrospective is aimed at \u201cpure appreciation of beauty and to honoring the goodness of the masters for the people\u2019s appreciation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c1 want to magnify only the beauty of visual arts because to let real beauty and truth shine through\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n

Pioneering Art Supplies in the Philippines<\/p>\n

M Gallery started only 7 years ago, with Madame Imelda R Marcos herself cutting the fibbon, but its roots are deeply grounded In the owner\u2019s very auspicious family history.\"\"<\/p>\n

The gailery has been mounting group exhibits by both veteran and young artists since 2014.<\/p>\n

Mrs Monteverde Is the granddaughter of the Philippines\u2019 pioneer art supplies store patriarch Mariano Enriquez, who opened the only art supplies store in Recto.<\/p>\n

M Enriquez Art Supply started as the only importer, dealer, distributor, and seller of quality matenals becoming a household word among students and artists.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was a teenager then and I would meet all sorts of artists and students visiting our store to buy their art supplies.\u201d Mrs Monteverde recalied. \u201cWe catered to architecture and engineering, too.\u201d\"\"<\/p>\n

Painting then was more of a hobby than a profession,\u201d she explained, \u201cartists would sometimes give us their paintings in exchange for art supplies\u2014or simply because they\u2019re happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

This accounted for how the family started to accumulate so many paintings over the period of 50 years. They supplied National Book Store with imported but affordable art top-quality materials like Grumbacher, Talens, Holbein, and Sakura.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cWe would have the likes of BenCab, Vicente Manansala, HR Ocampo. Ibarra dela Rosa, Oscar Zalameda, Federico Aguilar Aicuaz, Lopez, Custodio, and Buenaventura dropping in to buy paints and supplies,\u201d she mused.\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cMany of these works were the artists\u2019 own gifts to our grandfather. Others were bought from galleries. Many were procured in bulk from galleries that closed,\u201d and, thus. the Monteverde art collection grew through the years and are now being sold for the first time.<\/p>\n

Getting Inspiration from 1930s Architecture<\/p>\n

\u201cThe architecture was exquisite!\u201d she delighted. Thus, the Inspiration to come up with a gallery came from the purchase of the beautiful pre-War Rufino ancestral mansion on Taft Avenue.\"\"<\/p>\n

The artworks found a new home. \u201cWhen I bought the mansion, I knew it would have to more than just our office.\u201c Mrs Monteverde waxed. She now handles the family\u2019s importing business,\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cTraditional Chinese women aren\u2019t allowed to Inherit and run the family business.\u201d she confessed. \u201cSo I concentrated on something else I knew would be a great livelihood, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have always been fond of old things\u2014fumiture, lamps, and, yes, paintings\u2014and we used to import shiploads of antique from around the globe,\u201d she shared.\"\"\u201cSo, we came up with M Gallery or Gallery M, which could mean Monteverde, museum, or even Mabini,\u201d she teasingly quipped, \u201cdepending on how you want to look at it.\u201d\"\"<\/p>\n
